The spirit of the Festival of Lights came alive in the classrooms of GIIS KL as Class 1 CBSE students eagerly participated in a special Diwali Paper Craft Activity on October 17th. The hands-on session was designed not only to celebrate the joyous festival but also to serve as a fun, educational experience that nurtured cultural awareness and essential skills.
The activity centered on creating colorful paper diyas—the traditional earthen lamps that symbolize the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil during Diwali. The students worked enthusiastically with a variety of materials, including colored paper, scissors, glue, glitter, and decorative stickers, to craft their own unique festive decorations.
Teachers played an essential role, carefully guiding each child through the steps of folding, cutting, and assembling their diya designs. Their assistance ensured a safe environment and, more importantly, encouraged imaginative expression, allowing the children’s personalities to shine through their artwork.
The primary purpose of the craft activity was multi-faceted. It aimed to help the young learners understand the significance of diyas in the Diwali celebration and express their festive joy through art. Beyond the cultural immersion, the session provided an excellent opportunity for skill development, specifically enhancing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination through the cutting and gluing process.
This meaningful activity perfectly aligned with the comprehensive educational approach of GIIS KL. It encompassed several elements of the school's 9GEMs framework such as Gem 3: Visual and Performing Arts, Gem 5: Innovation and Creativity, Gem 7: Universal Values and Ethics and Gem 9: Skill Development
The event also demonstrated a commitment to global sustainability and educational excellence, correlating directly with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) , specifically SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
By the end of the session, the classrooms were filled with radiant paper diyas and the proud smiles of students who had successfully created their own piece of Diwali magic, beautifully blending art, culture, and learning.
